What Are Free Radicals?

Adapted from an article in The Share Guide July/August 2008 by Gary Null, Ph.D.

Free radicals are molecules that have an unpaired electron, which makes them capable of damaging cells, tissues, and organs. These dangerous molecules can weaken many vital aspects of body functioning, including our cardiovascular, neurological, and immune systems.

A growing body of research shows that free radicals contribute to the aging process and to a long list of disorders, including heart disease and cancer, which now rank as two of the leading killers in our society.

The Origin of Free Radicals
Once a free radical if formed, it will try to restore its balance by stealing an electron from another molecule. Every time a molecule loses an electron, it may damage a healthy molecule in the process. As a result, the body's normal function will be impaired. A single free radical can destroy an enzyme, a protein molecule, or an entire cell.

Free radicals can stem from external pollutants or from our internal biochemical processes. The main sources are the environment, internal production, and pathology, stressors on the body systems.

The environment is full of toxins that either contain free radicals themselves, or generate free radicals after we breathe or swallow the substances. Free radicals form chain reactions. An initial free radical may form a second unbalanced free radical, which produces a third, and so on. If this chain reaction is not stopped, cellular damage may occur.

Assisting The Body's Defense Mechanisms
We must continually strive to balance the events taking place in the molecules of our bodies. The foods we eat and the drinks we drink are our first line of defense against free radicals, because they provide the body with nutritional support. We must obtain an adequate supply of the vitamins that contribute to the body's defenses against oxidant imbalance.
We need to take antioxidants, most commonly vitamins C, E, and A, such as those found in One Natural Experience drinks: O.N.E. Amazon Acai and O.N.E. Cashew Fruit...

High vitamin C intake may cut diabetes risk

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - An abundance of vitamin C in the diet may help lower a person's risk of developing type 2 diabetes, new research suggests.

In a study of middle-aged and older men and women, those with the highest blood levels of vitamin C were significantly less likely to develop diabetes over 12 years than those with the lowest levels, researchers found.

Fruits and vegetables are the main source of vitamin C in Western diets, and blood levels of vitamin C are good markers of fruit and vegetable intake, Dr. Nita G. Forouhi, at the Institute of Metabolic Science at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, England, and colleagues note.

The current findings "re-endorse the public health message of the beneficial effect of increasing total fruit and vegetable intake," the investigators wrote in Archives of Internal Medicine.

Forouhi's team followed 21,831 healthy men and women who were 40 to 75 years old for the development of type 2 diabetes. At study entry, all participants provided detailed health and lifestyle information, as well as blood samples, which investigators used to determine vitamin C levels.

Over the course of the study, 423 men and 312 women developed type 2 diabetes, an overall rate of 3.2 percent.

According to the investigators, the likelihood of developing diabetes was 62 percent lower in men and women with the highest circulating vitamin C levels, relative to men and women with the lowest vitamin C levels.

Factoring out other characteristics associated with diabetes risk, such as older age, gender, family history, alcohol intake, physical activity, smoking status and body weight did not significantly alter these associations.

These data offer "persuasive evidence of a beneficial effect of vitamin C and fruit and vegetable intake on diabetes risk," Forouhi and colleagues conclude.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 17th, the Community Center’s new lawn will be christened with a dance celebration extraordinaire with Brother to the Night ushering in picnic families and friends with his urban funk, followed by the vibrant color, small to tall exotic dancers of Melanie Kareem’s Middle Eastern Dance School with live drumming, which will meld into the cosmic, hypnotic extravaganza, tribal dance beat of Francesco’s Drum Heaven.

“Francesco’s cosmic dance beat sound is truly unique and I think everyone will be swept up and dancing on the lawn with him and his African drummers,” explains event chairperson Dianne Porchia. “He doesn’t want to be up on stage, but rather down on the grass along with the audience so everyone can really feel like they are participating in the musical experience.”

The movie on Sunday is the Oscar winning family-fantasy-comedy-adventure, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, by director Brad Silberling, based on the children’s books by Daniel Handler.

“Charley Gilleran of C&H Studios will be providing professional movie rigging for our 16”x24” movie screen facing our new green grass,” says Porchia. “And Topanga’s own Ernie Demontreux of Topanga Lumber will be introducing the movie and giving us his ‘inside scoop’ on some of the building materials used on the movie set.”

“The Topanga Nights events make for a great date night out or even a fun business promotion opportunity for the community,” boasts Porchia. “The Canyon Bistro offers a special box dinner menu especially for Topanga Nights with 20% going to the TCC and during last month’s event, Chryssa Lightheart of Pritchett-Rapf & Associates Realtors hosted a private wine tasting under the Big Oak for her clients and friends, which was a big hit.
